Meet Jason

Picture
Jason Nordin grew up in British Columbia before moving to South Australia in 1998. Jason has worked in the Barossa Valley wine industry and hospitality before realising a need for compassionate counselling services in the valley. Jason holds a diploma in counselling from the Australian Institute of Professional Counsellors.

Jason's counselling practice involves working with adolescents as they navigate their identity-forming years. Counselling doesn't mean we don't have fun. Jason can work with young people in his office or in the outdoors, adventuring in the Barossa Valley's natural areas. Jason uses solution-focused brief therapy and feedback-informed treatment to ensure counselling progress stay on track as you move towards your desired outcome.

Jason is an avid traveller and outdoor adventurer with his partner. He enjoys finding new food in southeast Asia and visiting family in North America. In his free time, Jason continues to play ice hockey in Adelaide and maintains a strong connection to the sport through years of coaching experience. He has previously served as an assistant coach for the Adelaide Rush women's state team and has coached the South Australian state youth ice hockey team, contributing to the development of the sport at both senior and junior levels.

Jason's Approach to Counselling

Picture
Jason's approach is grounded in solution-focused brief therapy. Solution-focused approaches to counselling emerged in the 1970s and 1980s as family therapists endeavoured to do more of what works to help people instead of overthinking what is wrong with them. Ultimately, an empowering approach, solution-focused counselling aims to keep counselling as brief as possible - not one session too many.

Solution-focused counselling is grounded in a series of assumptions about people seeking additional support:
  • There is no such thing as an unmotivated person
  • Counselling should provide moments for people to see themselves at their best
  • The problems bringing someone to counselling can be complicated, solutions don't have to be
  • The person receiving counselling is the best judge of what is working
  • There are always exceptions to problems, sometimes these exceptions are important clues toward solution

Feedback-Informed Treatment

For counselling to be effective, the process must be collaborative. Feedback from people in counselling is key to making sure we're headed towards the desired outcome. That's why I incorporated Feedback-Informed Treatment (FIT) into Barossa Valley Counselling. FIT is an evidence-based method that routinely checks in on your progress through brief, simple outcome questionnaire (they take approximately 1-2 minutes). This ensures that our counselling stays focused on what matters most to you, what is working, and so I can adapt to your evolving needs and goals.

Bring FIT to my counsellor service can as much as:
  • Double the rate of positive outcomes
  • Increase engagement in the process
  • Reduce the likelihood of experience no benefit

By using FIT, we create a culture of feedback where your voice is heard throughout the counselling process. It allows us to gauge whether our work together is helping, identify any challenges, and make adjustments to ensure that your therapy is as effective as possible. This approach leads to better outcomes, improved engagement, and a stronger therapeutic relationship.

At Barossa Valley Counselling, Jason is committed to providing tailored care, grounded in your unique experience. Through ongoing feedback, we ensure that the support you receive is not only relevant but empowering you to make lasting change in your life. FIT helps me to make data-driven decisions about the course of therapy. The process also allows you - the person with the most at stake - to monitor your progress throughout the process.
